US Silica’s dust collector equipment slab at its Montpelier, VA mine was undermined due to improper water drainage during the mining process, causing its structural steel supports to subside. SW Funk Industrial was consulted early on and provided engineering and construction expertise to develop the most effective and safe repair method. After finalizing the design, SW Funk Industrial’s experienced crews installed four H piles at the equipment’s corners, temporarily lifted the equipment, placed horizontal steel on the H-piles, set the equipment on new steel and concrete foundations, and welded the steel structure as needed. Once the equipment was secured, all concrete around the area was demolished and replaced. Multiple trenches were repaired and redirected during concrete placement. The entire project was completed during two (2) Thursday-Sunday shutdowns using SW Funk Industrial’s skilled tradesmen.
